First Episode Psychosis – The Icelandic Study

Purpose: In the past 5 years we have established an early intervention service, Laugarásinn, at Landspitali university hospital in Iceland. Laugarásinn provides specialized care for young people aged 18-30 years who have suffered a first episode of psychosis (FEP). The population of Iceland is only 330.000 people and our aim is that the majority of young people in Iceland who develop psychosis, will go through the treatment program at Laugarásinn. Our aim is a long-term prospective study gathering data on different aspects of FEP, treatment and prognostic factors. Materials and Methods: All patients who enter the program will be invited to participate in the study and will give informed consent. Data on clinical factors, physical factors, symptoms, medication, and use of illegal drugs, MRI, cognitive testing and special aspects of the treatment program will be gathered. A database is under development where the data will be registered. Inclusion in the study has already started. Results: Inclusion in the study started this year and we do not have any results to present at this meeting. Conclusion: This is a long-term prospective study that has just started this year.. It is our belief that we have a unique opportunity for research in this field. The reason is the small population and the fact that Laugarásinn is the only treatment program for FEP in Iceland and the aim is that a large majority of young people in Iceland who develop psychosis will enter the program.
